Sep 29, 2011
Today started like most other days, but it slowly turned for the worse. First things first, I made the train so that's good. I got into the office and found it deserted. Nothing unusual there, I am quite often the first one in on the Confluence team. I read my e-mail and found one that informed me of an unfortunate family event. Not great, but hopefully things will improve. In the early morning Jonathan wanted to talk to me. It was a misunderstanding but still on this day it was not great. After that the day just rolled on. I was not really motivated to do much, things just did not feel all that important. On the train home I finished writing an opinion peace on velocity (no, not Apache velocity, but velocity as in speed). I'll post it on my blog once I've let it digest a bit. I made Jessica read it in the evening to get a feeling if it was too harsh or if I needed to tone it down a bit. A little bit of a silver lining, Blind Guardian tomorrow has moved to the Metro theatre which is heaps better for us! But because of this concert we will not be home in time for blogging tomorrow, so stay tuned for the update on Saturday. To make a pretty bad day worse, Mikka does not seem well. He sat in my lap and I am not convinced he will survive the weekend, I really really hope he will but it is too early to say. Probably back to the vet on Saturday.

We woke up at around 5:20 or so by Jessica's phone ringing. It was a wrong number. I got up at my normal time and made my train. At work I did some code reviews and responded to some code reviews. I helped make a change to our dog-fooding server. I then got sucked into a investigation why a staging server was running out of memory (bad testing data). I also chased up about our performance agents. As such it did not feel like I got much stuff done. On the way home I wrote up the start of a blog post. I will probably finish writing it tomorrow. Just another day in the bank so to say.

I was very tired in the morning, but I made the train by not shaving. I also had time to buy a new ticket for this week so that's good. At work I did a number of things. I had intended to do 20% and got about an hour's worth of that done. After that I had to chase up the trouble with the performance builds, and two other issues that came my way. A meeting was thrown into the mix just for good measure. At home Mikka seemed better, but I don't think he is really well yet, poor guy. Not much happened today.

It was a bit cool in the morning, but of course that did not stop me from making my train. In Penrith Ryan got on and sat down next to me and so we had a little talk on the way in. We spoke about just odd bits and pieces, none of if work related. At work I found the performance builds had broken over the weekend, so I spent the morning chasing that up. I then fixed a bug in Studio, but I could not check it in as I had not run the tests. After lunch we swapped desks for a bit of variation (I am sure there was some other reason for it, but to me it was for a bit of fun). I ended up with a nice window seat so I am happy. Only bad thing is that it is a bit further to the cheese. At home I found Mikka bleeding, after a bit of emergency looking after I think we've concluded he must have either hurt himself on a bit of straw, or maybe even bit himself. Had he not already been bad I would not be quite as worried. He stopped bleeding vary quickly so that was good. I am worried though, and we are preparing ourselves that he may not be with us for that much longer. He was in my lap in the evening and he seemed happy and his normal self then, but with a pink nose. He also left a few poops in my lap just for good measure. Normally I'm not all that keen on it, but given his GI Stasis it was good.

Sofia was awake several times during the night, we only had to be up once early in the night, but I woke up the other times (Jessica slept). As a consequence I was quite tired in the morning, but I got out of bed after the eight news. Sofia got up after nine. The weather was bad, with rain the whole day. We spent the morning doing not much at all. I think we were pretty much just watching TV under a blanket. After lunch we did more things though. I updated my parents' blog to move into this decade. I spent way longer on that than I wanted updating the blog, things did not work, and I can not understand why. I ended up resorting to a bit of an ugly hack to make it work so I could get on with things. I also moved from the decade old (hmm, a theme here it seems) Compass to the new and 'improved' (I use the term lightly) 360° software. Turns out their "backup" and "restore" can not be used for disaster recovery. If you try that you get really strange error messages. In the end I ended up using the "export"/"import" feature to move data from the old install to the new one. With that out of the way I sat down and attempted to make a dorodango! I've wanted to do this for some time now, and I actually succeeded. I only made a small one, and it is not completely dry yet, but it should be good tomorrow, I hope. Sofia wanted to help, so she got to play with the dirt a bit while I was doing the basics. What is a dorodango? It is a Japanese art form, where you take dirt and water and make a shiny ball out of it. An example can be found here. That took the rest of the afternoon and I then cooked. After dinner it was bedtime for all the little girls. I had a quick look at writing a TAP for our pvr, looks easy, just a normal C program, should be able to get it running in no time at all. A pretty productive day despite the bad weather.

Last night we decided to take Mikka to the vet. He was not eating well and was not really himself. It was raining a bit in the morning when we left. He travelled in a basket and we had to wait maybe half an hour at the vet before we got to go in. The verdict was that the Gastrointestinal Stasis. He got some painkiller and other medication and we were on our way again. I also got advised to buy vegetable baby food for him and  give it to him with the help of a syringe. In the evening he was much better and I hope it was not caused by something else, but only time will tell if our old little guy is sick, for now he seems better though. After I got home it was time for morning tea and after that Sofia and I went out for a quick run on the scooter down Tabor street. After that it was lunchtime and after lunch we pretty much got ready to talk to my parents which happened soon after fika. After speaking to farmor and farfar we had dinner and then the tired girls went to bed.

I got up today and made the train. At work it was pretty much no work done. I started by checking up on the work I checked in yesterday. The performance builds showed a clear increase (~13%), for this particular component. After standup (9:45), it was end of work, really. at 10:30 we went down to the basement and had demos for what had been done during the week. After that we went to darling harbour and attended 'pizza class'. A mr Salvatore taught us how to make pizza dough, and how to spin pizza dough. You just have to love tourists, during the pizza spinning games a korean (I think he was) tourist walks straight in, gets a photo or two, gets Salvatore to pose and then goes on his way. The day was lovely, and darling harbour is a nice place to be, with the harbour and the ferries coming and going. After lunch the rest of the team proceeded to the pub (it was now 16:10 or so) but I chose to go home instead. I did not feel a desire to drink beer and get home late today.

Evie woke up at 4 or so this morning, I think she may have been a bit cold and once awake realise that she could have a meal now. Jessica fed her of course. I eventually got up and made my train. At work I did performance work. I got a few changes in and fixed up a couple of builds. As such it was a fairly productive day. At home I spoke to farmor Ulla as usual.

Sep 21, 2011
Today was a day marked by changes. First large change was that I used the last test strip for my old metering system. 10 years almost to the day later the meter (yep, same one) is now retiring. I hope the new system will be just as reliable. Second and minor change was that the ticket machine was working in the morning so I topped up my ticket. At work I worked on a foundered 20% rewriting a platform specific macro to be cross platform and actually shippable. At around three we had champagne and a few talks about Confluence 4. It is finally out! I snuck out of work around ten past four and made it down to the Lindt cafe at Cocklebay wharf and got some macaroons. From there it was up to "the corner" where I met Ryan for our usual walk and talk to the station. In Glenbrook it was up the hill to pick up the girls and then down the hill again to the club for the birthday of one of Jessica's cousins. From there it was home and bed for girls and the last change for us, we watched the last episode of the series.

I got up and made the train as usual. At the station the ticket machine was closed, so I couldn't get a new ticket, even though I had the time. Luckily my ticket does not run out for a few days yet. At work i cleaned up code for most of the day. During lunch Ryan and I talked about an interesting project we are doing. We started designing our framework. We hope we will open source this eventually, but of course first we need something that works. I also noticed that yesterday was the first birthday of Mageia, the Linux distribution I am running to write this. Good stuff, hopefully it will last many more years.
