So you've got a digital SLR, or maybe you are considering buying one and want to learn more about it. I have decided to write a few short articles to help you out. They are just a number of blog posts covering a specific aspect of the digital SLR.

So you've got a digital SLR, but what does S-L-R mean? The name comes from how the camera works. The letters stand for Single Lens Reflex, and that explains pretty much what it is all about. In your camera you have a mirror (or reflector) that takes the light coming in through the lens and reflects it up to the viewfinder. Thus your camera only has a single lens, not one for the viewfinder and one for the CCD. When you press the shutter button this mirror moves out of the way by use of a spring to let the light hit the CCD, or film if it is an old SLR. This is the cause of the sound you hear. The benefits of this is that when you look through the viewfinder you are seeing the same light that the CCD will catch. This means that you will be able to make good adjustments.
